Water and Sewer Engineer

Due to its beautiful natural environment and enviable lifestyle, the
Mid-Western Region is currently experiencing significant growth and are searching for a Water and Sewer Engineer to work with and support the Strategic Engineering Coordinator – Water & Sewer in planning for efficient and effective water supply and sewerage systems, including cost effective delivery of specific projects, provision of technical advice to ensure appropriate developer contributed asset creation, and as defined in the annual Management Plan and in line with Mid-Western Regional Council’s corporate and strategic plans. This role works across teams to facilitate effective and compliant developer contribution to water and sewer assets.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide engineering and technical services consistent with legislative requirements and Council’s Community Strategic Plan.
  • Provide leadership and development of direct and indirect staff reports;
  • Provide advice to Council’s Planning Department and Development Engineering Team regarding requirements for and assessment of developer contributed water and sewer assets.
  • Manage technical staff to develop and maintain effective asset management systems.
  • Provide technical design advice to key stakeholders regarding development proposals through internal referrals, pre-lodgement meetings and/or onsite as may be required.
  • Assess and calculate developer contributions in accordance with Council’s Development Servicing Plans.
  • Issue notices and certificates of compliance under the Water Management Act.
  • Implement and maintain effective liquid trade waste and backflow prevention programs.
  • Deliver projects and outcomes in accordance with budget allocations and strategic priorities;
  • Engage and coordinate contractors in accordance with Council’s policies, procedures and delegations;
  • To promote and demonstrate the core values and behavioural requirements of the Workplace Environment Statement.

To be successful in this role you will have

  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent recognised by the Institution of Engineers Australia;
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in Local Government, a water authority or similar.
  • Thorough knowledge of planning, design and construction of water supply and sewerage systems including whole-of-life asset management with respect to infrastructure service delivery.
  • Knowledge of legislation and other legal instruments relevant to the position.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and supervising multiple projects, programs and resources concurrently with minimal guidance.
  • Class C driver's licence
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact at all levels on technical advice and policy issues to both internal and external clients.
  • Proven ability to perform successful negotiation & conflict resolution to achieve satisfactory outcomes.
  • Proven ability in the use of effective decision-making and problem solving techniques / processes.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety responsibilities and a commitment to attending relevant WHS training.
  • Ability and capacity to identify, assess, prioritise and control risks to health and safety of employees, visitors and contractors and to the environment arising from the activities under their control.

The salary range being offered for the position of Water and Sewer Engineer is $4298 - $4837 per fortnight (dependent on skills, qualifications and experience) plus superannuation, a RDO every 4 weeks and long service leave after 5 years.
