Your Town with Cass – Braidwood NSW

In this month’s Your Town column Move To More blogger and Eugowra local, Cassie Gates, chats with Sheelagh Noonan about her life in the southern tablelands town of Braidwood.

What’s your Braidwood story Sheelagh?

I have been in Braidwood for 5 years now. Previously I lived in various larger locations like Canberra and the Central Coast and I wanted to downsize and was looking for a change. I knew of Braidwood, so I thought I’ll give that a go. I am among many in this situation, there are a lot of recent movers to Braidwood, the town is growing.

What is life REALLY like in Braidwood?

It used to be an older demographic, retirees mainly but since covid and the cost-of-living pressures there is an interesting mix of younger families moving here too. We are in such a fantastic location in a rural setting only an hour away from Canberra, an hour from the South Coast and three hours from Sydney. It really is wonderful! The town is “walkable” which I like, everything is all very close and easy to get around to the various places.

What sort of jobs are available in Braidwood?

Locally there is a healthy commercial environment with many retail and hospitality places. The creative world is also prominent here; many artists and their businesses are thriving, with many tourists coming through our town. Agriculture is very much a part of the community. Mainly cattle are farmed here with some sheep and mixed farming. Other significant producers in the agriculture industry are fruit and vegetables, which are booming! Some have been selling through outlets in town which is wonderful!

What do you do on the weekend for fun?

There are regular classic music concerts held in one of the old stone churches in town, which I like to attend. And there is always an art show opening to go to. I have friends come and visit regularly and the town is very social, so I feel like I always have something to go to. Another thing I have started doing is going on rural walks with one of the local galleries, it’s beautiful.

What is the art & culture scene like?

There are many ceramic studios in town as well as visual artists. Some are award winning too! Pop up galleries happen a lot throughout the year so there is always something new to look at. There are many writers in the town too, which is fascinating. Sometimes the locals get to partake in workshops held by the artists or writers.

Does Braidwood have many places to dine out? Any recommendations?

During the day, there are many very high-quality cafes to choose from. Some favourites are: Casanovas, Deadwood, and Albion. Night time could be better; there are a couple of pubs open and a Himalayan Bar & Restaurant, Smokey Horse which is great fun.

Is Braidwood easy to get to if you don’t drive?

There are daily buses to Canberra and the South Coast. It would be good to have better public transport as it is restricted. There is a lot of carpooling. There even is a Facebook page for it, where people can say they are heading to the airport on a particular day and time if they want a lift.

What is the housing situation like in the region?

The prices have stabilised in the area and there are some available. Rentals are tight but there does seem to be more coming available.

Can you get in to see a doctor? Where is the nearest hospital?

There is a doctors surgery and hospital in town, with emergency facilities. The good thing is we are so close to Canberra or Queanbeyan if needed. I have heard there are new doctors coming to town as the current doctor is retiring.

Ok. Here’s your time to pitch! If you had to give someone one reason to move to the Braidwood region, what would it be?

The benefits of a rural lifestyle (close community, the environment, and culture) with easy, close access to a major city of Canberra and the South Coast. It’s a great place, with great people! I have not regretted at all moving to this beautiful community.
