Date posted: November 18, 2024

Closes: Dec 02, 2024

Join Bellingen Shire Council as a Works Assistant in the Road Maintenance and Construction team and make a positive impact on our community’s infrastructure.  This hands-on role offers an opportunity to work on a range of civil projects that keep our roads and spaces safe, clean, and accessible.

About Us

Bellingen Shire is a picturesque and diverse area located on the Mid North Coast of NSW halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and just south of Coffs Harbour.  It has a total area of 1,605 square kilometres with a coastline of approximately 10km.  The region is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, including lush rainforests, pristine rivers, and the World Heritage-listed Dorrigo National Park.  The area is known for its diverse ecosystems, abundant wildlife, and charming towns, cafes and artisan shops.

Bellingen Shire’s natural beauty, cultural richness, and welcoming community make it a unique and attractive destination for both residents and visitors, with its emphasis on sustainability and preserving the environment adding to its appeal.

We are a progressive local government authority employing approximately 150 dedicated employees.

The Opportunity

Bellingen Shire Council has an exciting Capital Works program planned for the coming years.  We’ll be investing over $20M on local roads infrastructure in the coming years, alongside a large Capital Works program planned on our State Road, Waterfall Way.

We have multiple Works Assistant roles available, including:

  • Works Assistant – Based primarily in the Dorrigo Roads team
  • Works Assistant – Vegetation management driving tractor mower/slasher and spraying weeds
  • Works Assistant – General

While these positions are designated to specific teams, successful candidates may be required to work across various teams or locations to support projects in Council’s broader infrastructure.

Reporting to the Works Supervisor, the Works Assistant plays a key role in operational activities, supporting construction and maintenance of the region’s infrastructure. From traffic control to plant operation, you’ll work as part of a team to maintain work sites, handle equipment with care, and ensure all safety protocols are upheld.

We are looking for someone with a current NSW Class MR Driver Licence, along with WHS General Induction Training (White Card) and ideally a Certificate III in Civil Construction. Prior experience in road maintenance or similar projects, as well as proficiency in operating medium plant such as a skid steer or watercart, will be valuable. Additional qualifications like traffic control and first aid certification are desirable but not essential.

To succeed in this role, you will need a commitment to safety, the ability to work well with a team, and sound communication skills. You should be capable of inspecting and maintaining equipment, completing relevant documentation, and handling public inquiries professionally. Flexibility to participate in an on-call roster, including some after-hours work, is also important.
