Cowra Council is excited to have 10 School Based Traineeships on offer commencing 2025 for local school students who will begin Year 11 in 2025. Are you looking to kickstart your career and obtain a nationally recognised qualification whilst receiving on the job training and continuing to complete Year 11/12 at School? Are you passionate and committed to completing a School Based Traineeship and successfully carrying out all of the necessary training requirements? Council is pleased to have school-based traineeships on offer in areas of; IT, Finance, Business, Stores, Parks & Gardens, Waste Management, Agriculture, Civil Construction (Roads Construction and Maintenance) & Water/Wastewater Industries! 

 

School Based Trainee - Information Services Assistant; Certificate III Information Technology

This position will work closely with our Information Services/Technology team to assist in various IT-related activities at Council. This is a hands-on role where you will provide essential support to staff across all departments. Duties will include troubleshooting and resolving hardware, software and network issues, help in setting up and configuring new equipment, including computers, printers, and mobile devices.

School Based Trainee - Finance Assistant; Certificate III in Accounts Administration

In this role, you'll gain hands-on experience in the field of financial operations. This position will undertake key processing tasks with broad exposure to accounts receivable, accounts payable, plant & inventory, payroll & general finance operations.

School Based Trainee - Civic Centre Assistant; Certificate III in Business 

In this position you'll assist in the daily operations of the Civic Centre. Responsibilities will include assisting with coordinating event setups, providing customer service to visitors, managing bookings and ensuring the facility is well-maintained.

School Based Trainee - Storeperson; Certificate II Supply Chain Operations

During this traineeship you'll learn about inventory management and warehouse/stores operations. Duties will encompass receiving and dispatching goods, organising storage areas, maintaining stock records, ground maintenance activities of the Depot yard and ensuring the stores remain clean and safe. Applicants with a P1 licence or working towards a P1 licence are preferred.

School Based Trainee - Parks & Gardens; Certificate II in Horticulture

This position undertakes labouring duties associated with the maintenance of our Park & Gardens section. Duties include, horticulture, mowing, whipper snipping, mulching and weeding, turf preparation, irrigation work, spraying, planting and tree maintenance, flower bed preparation including planting and attending to flowers as well as the operation of small plant and equipment associated with the role including chainsaws & ride on mowers. Applicants with a P1 licence or working towards a P1 licence are preferred.

School Based Trainee - Material Recycling Facility Attendant; Certificate III Waste Management

In this role, you'll support the operations of our material recycling facility. Responsibilities involve working on the sorting line processing recyclable materials, performing customer service at the weighbridge & monitoring equipment.

School Based Trainee - Saleyards Attendant; Certificate II in Agriculture

In this position you'll assist the Saleyards staff with the management of livestock sales facilities. Duties will include handling livestock, maintaining clean environments, assisting with organising sale day and liaising with vendors.

School Based Trainee - Civil Constriction x 2 (Roads Maintenance & Roads Construction); Certificate II in Civil Construction

In this role the applicants will assist in providing high level service within the Roads Construction & Maintenance Section. Duties will include concrete and asphalt work, traffic control, manual handling and general labouring along with the operation of plant and equipment associated with the role. Applicants with a P1 licence or working towards a P1 licence are preferred. 

Position Description 

School Based Trainee Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants; Certificate II in Water Industry Operations

This position will assist with operating and maintaining Council's Treatment Plants in accordance with regulatory requirements. Duties will include, assisting with monitoring of flow meters, taking samples & carrying out routine analyses, performing routine servicing & cleaning of storage facilities, plants and pipes and assist with the repair of faults in water supply and storage systems.

To be successfully considered for a School Based Traineeship, you will have:

  • Relevant work experience or demonstrated prior knowledge will be highly regarded in the area you are applying for.
  • Commencing Year 11 in 2025.
  • Commitment to working one day per week. Please note the day will be Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday as a set day for each term. 
  • Ability and demonstrated commitment to undertake the relevant qualification. 
  • Able to reliably get to and from work.
  • Willingness to contribute toward the success of your team.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong work ethic with a commitment to health, safety and environmental work practices.
  • The ability to follow direction and procedures, while showing initiative. 
  • Either hold or be working towards a Driver’s licence - essential.

Position Details

  • $15.37ph to $22.95ph, wage is dependent on age.
  • 11.5% Superannuation
  • Two Year Traineeship, with employment concluding after the completion of 100days of paid employment/completion of the qualification. 
  • Hours of work for outdoor staff are 7am to 4pm (during summer 6:30am to 3:30pm)
  • Hours of work for indoor staff are 8am to 4:45pm
  • Employment conditions are in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award.
