About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Sustainability and works within the City Sustainability Department. The Environmental Officer assists in the management of various environmental aspects including but not limited to lake management, water management, waste management and minimisation, land conservation, energy efficiency and community engagement and environmental education. The role also supports internal and external organisational and compliance reporting and provides a high level of customer service to our community.

The Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare programs and undertake activities that ensure the progressive implementation of the City of Palmerston Sustainability Strategy and Community Plan activities relating to waste and environmental management.
  • Project manage minor projects and provide support for major projects relating to sustainability and environmental management initiatives, including but not limited to water management, waste management and minimisation, land conservation and energy efficiency.
  • Coordinate and deliver environmental sustainability, environmental management and community engagement and education programs and activities.
  • Represent Council in relation to activities relevant to the role.
  • Undertake research and prepare information for the development of projects, plans, policies and reports.
  • Provide technical advice relating to environmental activities.
  • Support waste management activities including administration of kerbside waste collection and waste transfer station contracts.
  • Co-ordinate environmental compliance and report requirements for Environmental Protection License for the Archer Waste Transfer Station.
  • Undertake community engagement and education, in alignment with the goals and actions under the Sustainability Strategy and Community Plan.
  • Support Palmerston Lake management programs.
  • Support emergency management operations, including the updating of emergency management materials, coordination of annual training activities and incident management system.
  • Undertake accurate collection, analysis and reporting of environmental data.
  • Proactively and professionally engage with internal and external stakeholders regarding projects and activities. Apply judgement and problem-solving skills to consider and analyse complex options.

  • Research and analyse environmental and land use issues and prepare accurate reports and plans.
  • Provide high level customer service in relation to all activities, including resolving complex issues.
  • Prepare correspondence and undertake procurement and administrative duties relevant to the role and as directed.
  • Be part of an Emergency Management team.

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, applicants will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications Environmental Science (or equivalent) and/or environmental planning, or diploma level qualifications. Related qualifications and experience will be considered including for example Certificate IV in Conservation and Ecosystem Management and / or minimum three (3) years experience in a similar role working in environmental management and sustainability.
  • Understanding or ability to obtain understanding of the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act 1988 and Environmental Protection Act 2019 and other legislation as relevant to the role.
  • Experience in the delivery of sustainability, environmental and/or waste management activities.
  • Proficient in the use of computer software and systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply collaborative skills in consulting across a range of disciplines.
  • Demonstrated skills in problem solving and resolving complex issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the preparation of planning correspondence and reports.
