Role

An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction. This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
Certification and/or qualifications of up to three years can be required at this level (noting that Registered Nurse is not included at this level, the first level for which is Level 1 range 3).
A role at this range may include:
  • Specific support tasks to achieve outcomes. Typically, this will involve accountability for a single function, (e.g. ensuring data is properly maintained) or the co-ordination of a work area under the direction of the principal or a manager.
  • Assisting teachers, within an educational program, by undertaking specific support tasks or the coordination of the support function.
  • Supervised health and wellbeing support tasks, medical intervention support tasks, or other specialised student/teacher support roles (e.g. enrolled nurses performing the role as described in schedule 3). These roles require specific qualifications and/or training, including roles where further training must be undertaken from time to time. The role is for a specific purpose, for which there will be direct accountability as opposed to support roles that are carried out by a range of staff performing routine tasks under direction.
  • Technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgements where there are clear guidelines and limited options. Routine technical support in libraries, science, and information technology would be typical examples.
An education support class position at this range commencing at the base will initially be limited to undertaking routine tasks that are carried out under close supervision and direction. Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established, and direction is readily available. Subject to any specific qualification and/or training requirement, an education support class employee employed in this range may be progressively required to undertake coordination, specialised student/teacher support tasks, or technical tasks as experience in the role is gained.

Responsibilities

Preparing meals: Cook and prepare nutritious meals that meet school dietary standards.
Food safety: Ensure all food is cooked to the correct temperature, stored properly, and handled with hygiene standards in mind.
Portion control: Serve appropriate portion sizes to students and staff.
Serving students and staff: Distribute food in a timely and friendly manner during lunch or break times.
Maintain food quality: Ensure food is served at the proper temperature and is visually appealing.
Monitoring food waste: Minimize food waste by encouraging proper portions and tracking leftovers.
Cleaning kitchen and dining areas: Regular cleaning of work surfaces, equipment, and the dining space to maintain a sanitary environment.
Dishwashing: Ensure dishes, utensils, and trays are cleaned and sanitized.
Waste disposal: Properly dispose of food scraps and general waste, adhering to any recycling protocols.

Other Information

This position is a part time casual employment , 4 hours per week as required by the College.

Location Profile

Swan Hill College is located 350 kilometres north west of Melbourne on the Murray River and is situated within the CBD of the rural city of Swan Hill. In 2025 755 students are enrolled at the College supported by in excess of 100 teaching and non-teaching staff. There is an equal gender balance and the catchment area includes township primary schools, local private schools and outlying primary schools some of which are 60 kilometres or further from the College. A comprehensive bus system services the College and other schools in the township. Some of our students travel for over 2 hours every day to gain access to the College.
The College has continued to work on facilities development to a point where it now boasts some of the best facilities in the State. A 250 seat theatre, modern technology facilities, outstanding library and extensive sporting arenas including stadium are but a few examples. Swan Hill College continues its focus on information technology the addition of a technology hub based in our library which includes VR, 3D printers, laser cutters/engravers and green screen.
The College Leadership Team currently comprises of the Principal, three Assistant Principals, the Business Manager and six Leading Teachers with specific portfolios.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is well embedded across the college. At Swan Hill College we work together to achieve excellence and have high expectations of behaviour to create an environment which promotes individual academic and social growth. The College has a Flexible Learning Options (FLO) campus. This program offers flexible learning opportunities for students who are disengaged or challenged by structured learning in Years 8 to 12. The program is very successful and has given many students the chance to continue their education through various VET subjects, SBATs and VPC. At our FLO campus, we have also continued to work on improving our facilities, which include outdoor learning and sustainability areas. The FLO campus also boasts its own gymnasium, indoor pool and commercial size kitchen. The students operate the "FLO Campus Coffee Shop" each week and, as part of their barista studies, sell to the college community and public.
At Swan Hill College, we have a focus on the continued development of our teaching through the implementation of our Professional Learning Community. Our work is guided by the high impact teaching strategies and the inquiry cycle with a current focus on questioning and the high reliability literacy teaching procedures.
