We currently have an opportunity for Beach Lifeguards & Senior Beach Lifeguards to join the team in our Infrastructure & Liveability Department.

The Senior Beach Lifeguard role will be required to supervise designated lifeguards, maintain a high standard of Beach Lifeguard services within the Kiama Municipality at a designated beach/patrol and be responsible for total beach management.

What you'll need to be successful in the role...

  • Beach Lifeguard - Certificate II Public Safety Aquatic Rescue (PUA210119)
  • Senior Beach Lifeguard - Certificate III in Public Safety (Aquatic Search and Rescue) (PUA30319)

For each roles you will also need: 

  • Provide Advanced Resuscitation Certificate HLTAID015
  • Provide First Aid Certificate HLTAID011
  • Class C Drivers Licence
  • The ability to pass physical proficiency test which includes:
    • 800 metre pool swim in under 14 minutes.
    • Lifeguard ocean skills test including a ‘M’ shaped mission (600 metre swim, 800 metre run, 600 metre board paddle and 800 metre run) in under 28 minutes (dependent on surf conditions on the day).
    • Rescue and return patient to shore on rescue board over 250 metres, negotiate a surf break on return to shore on rescue board.
  • Knowledge of the use and operation of all rescue equipment
  • Extensive knowledge of surf awareness, conditions, hazards and wave types
  • Demonstrated beach management skills
  • The ability to assess and apply first aid to a patient in difficult situations
  • Customer service skills including the ability to negotiate and deal effectively with customers in difficult situations
  • The ability to operate radio and other telecommunication equipment

About you … 
In these roles you will need to be able to react quickly and efficiently to different situations and work as a team.  We are seeking beach lifeguards of varying experience and skill level to join our team for the 2024/2025 patrol season to work across the patrolled beaches within our local government area.  

Physical Testing...
Candidates progressing to the next stage of recruitment will be required to undertake Proficiency Testing, which will be directly followed by an interview with new applicants. Returning Beach Lifeguards from the previous patrol season are not required to interview. Proficiency Testing and Interviews will be held on the 20 July 2024 (for new applicants) and 27 July 2024 (for returning Beach Lifeguards).

Note:

  • All Applicants must bring proof of current qualifications on date of proficiency testing
  • This position has been identified as involving sporadic or occasional contact with children. Candidates will be required to hold a current Working with Children Check (if over 18 years of age)
  • Applicants who do not achieve competency in the Proficiency Testing will not progress to the next stage of the recruitment process.

  • Beach Lifeguard - $33.71 to $39.40 (depending on qualifications, skills and experience), these rates are inclusive of 25% casual loading
  • Senior Beach Lifeguard - $37.15 to $44.77 (depending on qualifications, skills and experience), these rates are inclusive of 25% casual loading
  • Penalty rates will be applied in line with the award including for working weekends and public holidays
  • Plus 11% superannuation
