Disaster Management Specialist

Council is seeking to appoint a permanent full time Disaster Management Specialist to contribute to Council’s success.

As our Disaster Management Specialist, you'll lead critical emergency management and disaster response initiatives that protect communities, support major industry, and strengthen regional resilience.

This is a rare opportunity to influence preparedness, response and recovery outcomes at a strategic level while working directly with senior leaders, government agencies, emergency services and community stakeholders.

About the Role

This position is a key leadership role and is responsible for overseeing Council's Disaster and Emergency Management systems and processes as well as coordinating crisis response activities to both immediate and emerging events. Inclusive of efficient and effective delivery of a range of emergency and disaster management services that are recognised as industry leading, the position is required to provide high-level advice and support to the Chief Executive Officer, Executive Leadership Team, Councillors, Non-Government Agencies and the State Emergency Service. 

You will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree qualifications in Emergency Management (or related discipline) and/or demonstrated practical experience in a similar role coordinating emergency management response with demonstrated high level knowledge and understanding of disaster management issues and concepts in crisis management.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of and experience interpreting and applying legislation, regulations and Code Practice that impact on emergency response management.

  • Proven experience developing, implementing and maintaining up-to-date strategies which integrate with other relevant policies and decision-making frameworks.

  • Extensive experience in project management of a significant complexity within a political environment with varying stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team and independently.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to work with diverse individuals and groups at all levels (Federal and State Government, Industry and Community), to impart knowledge, transfer skills and report to a broad range of people.

  • Proficient keyboard skills and experience using Microsoft Office Suite and operating corporate business systems.

  • Must be eligible and willing to obtain on appointment, a positive notice Working with Children Blue Card.

  • Legally able to drive a motor vehicle in Queensland.

This position requires immunisation against Hepatitis A/B and Tetanus.
