We are currently searching for members who meet two of the AEC’s membership categories:

Category C – animal welfare representative

Category D – layperson with no previous experience or bias

**Our Category C members have:**

*Been wildlife carers, fosterers of dogs or cats, members or volunteers of the RSPCA or Animal Welfare League

**To meet the Category D requirements, applicants must:**

*Not currently be employed by, or otherwise associated with, James Cook University.

*Never have been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either through employment or beyond their undergraduate education.

*Not meet the requirements for any other AEC membership category.

*Be able to provide an independent perspective when considering animal welfare and ethical issues.

**Detailed Description**

As an AEC member, you will have the opportunity to contribute to animal welfare, support responsible scientific research and learning, see innovative research at an early stage, and engage with researchers from across JCU.

**We are looking for a person who meets the following Category D requirements:**

*Is not currently employed by or otherwise associated with James Cook University.

*Has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either through employment or beyond their undergraduate education.

*Does not meet the requirements of any other AEC membership category.

*Can provide an independent perspective representing the views and interests of the wider community.

*Has an interest in animal welfare and is willing to consider a range of perspectives when making decisions.

**Members are expected to:**

*Reviewing research and teaching proposals involving animals before meetings.

*Providing independent opinions and advice during AEC meetings.

*Considering requests to modify previously approved projects.

*Reviewing project reports and other relevant documentation.

*Raising and considering concerns relating to the use, care and welfare of animals at JCU.

*Participating in inspections of animal facilities.

*Observing research activities and considering the care and welfare of animals involved.

*Undertaking relevant training and professional development.

*Maintain confidentiality regarding information considered by the Committee.

Members may also participate in occasional inspections of facilities where animals are held, and research activities are conducted.
