Are you passionate about commencing a rewarding career in the Mechanical Engineering industry? An apprenticeship is a great way to kickstart your journey, and will provide you with valuable skills and hands-on experience while being fully supported throughout your study!

As an Apprentice Mechanical Fitter, you will work under the guidance of experienced tradespeople to learn the ins and outs of mechanical systems, equipment maintenance and repairs. You’ll be involved in keeping Council facilities and equipment, such as water treatment plants, operating efficiently and safely.

You will have the opportunity to gain a Nationally Recognised Qualification through a combination of formal training and practical on-the-job experience with ongoing mentoring and support by qualified Council staff.

Please note employment for the position will be for the duration of the apprenticeship only.

What you will be doing:

During your Apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Undertake and complete a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade.
  • Practical application of the skills in the workplace by assisting Council’s Mechanical Fitters in the servicing and repairs of Council’s Water and Wastewater Assets.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Learn to diagnose and troubleshoot faults in equipment and systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks to ensure reliable operation of equipment.
  • Gain experience with pumps, motors, valves, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant Council Policies.

About You:

To be successful in attaining this apprenticeship, you will meet the following criteria:

  • A genuine interest in building a career as a Mechanical Fitter!
  • Minimum Year 10 standard of education is essential, Year 12 standard of education is desirable.
  • Ability to complete theory and practical work units associated with the Certificate being studied.
  • Commitment to the full term of the traineeship and study requirements.
  • The ability to problem solve and take initiative with a positive can-do attitude.
  • Experience being an active and effective member of a team (school, sport, work).
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and develop new skills and knowledge.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and to following instructions.
  • Commitment to upholding our organisational values.
  • Proficiency in Mathematics and Science.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Current Manual Drivers Licence (P1 or above required, or commitment to obtaining).
  • WHS General Construction Induction (White Card).

Hiring Timeline:

  • Invitations to attend our Apprentice Selection Centre (which will include an interview) for shortlisted candidates will be sent during week commencing Monday, 4 November 2024.
  • Apprentice Selection Centre for shortlisted candidates will be held on Tuesday, 12 November 2024 (compulsory).
  • Reference checks and pre-employment medical assessments will be actioned from week commencing Monday, 18 November 2024.
  • Employment commences mid-January 2024.
